Non-DDR Digital Collections Platforms
This a document describing the Digital Collections interface dependencies that are outside of DDR, particularly those in T2 and CDM. Alternatives to the dependencies listed below must be found before T2 and CONTENTdm (CDM) can be decommissioned.
Tripod 2
Tripod 2 (aka old digital collections) still provides access to digitized (and born digital) objects that have not been migrated into DDR. These collections/items fall into the following categories.
- Finding Aids w/ digital objects hosted on servers: is there a list of collections somewhere that identifies collections that are providing access to digital/digitized content from server space and not DDR? Is there a priority order of these? How can DCIT help?
- Migrating Collections: the Tripod 2 → DDR migration will continue through 2018. All collections that can be migrated will be migrated in to DDR and that will be their primary access platform once the process is complete.
- Special Interfaces: the DDR does not support some of the highly customized interfaces developed in T2 over the years. DCIT will attempt to replicate critical functionality in DDR using sustainable practices, however this will not accommodate all the interfaces listed here.
-
- Anatomical Fugitive Sheets: https://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/rubenstein_fugitivesheets/
- Images can be ingested into DDR, but not the flap flipping interface. Alternative accommodations TBD.
- Barnard and Gardner Table of Contents: https://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/rubenstein_barnardgardner/
- Consider not migrating TOC to DDR - consult with stakeholders
- Duke Chronicle Date browse: https://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/dukechronicle/Date/
- Will be replaced once Chronicle metadata has been migrated to DDR?
- Gamble Collection feature which compares B/W and color lantern slides: https://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/gamble_RL_10074_LS_0002/
- Will related items feature in DDR address this?
- H. Lee Waters OHMS Interface, ex: https://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/ohms-viewer/viewer.php?cachefile=hleewaters/rl10075dbcam0011010.xml
- Timecodes as links in description is the best workaround.
- Haiti declaration of Independence French translation: https://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/rubenstein_hdims01001/
- Can we upload the french translation and offer it as a "document" for download?
- Search for terms in CONTENTdm from T2
- Anatomical Fugitive Sheets: https://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/rubenstein_fugitivesheets/
Other digital collections related?
- Is T2 serving content for other projects that do not fall into the categories listed above? ex: Digital Durham (http://digitaldurham.duke.edu/index.php)
Other non-digital collections related (these projects are outside the scope of Digital Collections / DCIT as of Jan 2018):
- Metadata Only databases: ROAD, zines (https://library.duke.edu/rubenstein/findingdb/zines/), other? is there a list?
- Digital Exhibits?
- Timelines / EAC projects: https://library.duke.edu/rubenstein/collections/creators/
CONTENTdm
Duke Digital Collections relies on CONTENTdm for full text search and term highlighting. These features are integrated into the experience of browsing these four collections:
- Duke Chronicle
- DukEngineer
- JWT Newsletters
- Women's Liberation Movement Print Culture
Other collections may be indexed into CDM in 2017: LadySlipper, UA catalogs.
As of December 2017, collection pages in DDR link to ContentDM and T2 for access to full text search.
Scriptorium
Internet Archive
Lots and lots of books: https://archive.org/details/duke_libraries not preserved in DDR.
